US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that the importance of pursuing peace efforts between Syria and Israel "cannot be overstated".

She was speaking in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

It came as two American envoys met the Syrian foreign minister, Walid Al-Moallem, in the first visit to Damascus by high-ranking US officials in more than four years.

The Obama administration has indicated that it would like to improve US-Syrian relations after years of tension.
