Saudis try 75 militant suspects

Formal court proceedings have begun in Saudi Arabia against 75 suspected Islamic militants accused of conducting a wave of violence in the mid-2000s.

Judges at the court in Riyadh are looking at evidence put forward by prosecutors, though it is not known when full trials will begin.

More than 200 people were killed in the campaign of violence linked to al-Qaeda between 2003 and 2006.

Residential compounds housing foreign workers were among the targets.

The Saudi authorities say they have arrested more than 500 suspected militants in the past year.

Some have been accused of plotting attacks on targets including oil installations.
