President George W Bush has said the US will use military aircraft and naval forces to deliver aid to Georgia following its conflict with Russia.
Despite the ceasefire there are still reports of Russian military activity inside Georgia.
Two Georgian women who contacted the BBC News website have been sharing their experiences of the situation.
The eyewitness perspectives below do not represent an official account of events.

Earlier I was in a town 20km outside of Gori. It's occupied by Russians also. I was at a relative's house and could not go to the capital city because the main road of Georgia was blocked by Russian tanks. I saw this with my own eyes.

My father has spoken to refugees who told him that people are being killed in Gori. They are being murdered in Gori, and the whole region is on fire.
I have spoken to my relatives there who are extremely terrified.
They are sitting at home and they think that we need help.
People need help to leave Gori but right now it is impossible to leave this region because Russians have blocked the main roads.
Right now I am at home but earlier I saw houses on fire and blocked roads by Russian tanks. Now I am in my relative's house and I cannot move from here.

I could not tell you where I am. I am not so far from Gori, about 10km away. I saw a big line of Russian military.
Today, I was standing near Gori and we saw a lot of people who were running from Georgian villages. A lot of people they told us, a lot of people were murdered. A lot of women and young girls are being raped.

They're setting fire to houses, and many people have lost their homes

Cars were not allowed to move from West Georgia to East Georgia but the main thing was that 15 minutes ago we saw the Russian military - about 100 cars and tanks and soldiers with Kalashnikovs.
It was very dangerous. They were moving along the highway, they were not shooting but it wasn't a very quiet situation.
A lot of people are mobilised from villages and they want to run from their houses and the people of Georgia are panicking now. They are asking what happened behind us.
We explained that they are not shooting so the peaceful people are in shock and panicking now.
Gori is empty. The town is empty. They're setting fire to houses, and many, many people have lost their homes, lost their flats and a lot of people are murdered.
And a lot of people murdered are Chechens and Cossacks, and they say by Russians.
