The Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, has paid a visit to the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam, which commemorates the life of a young Jewish girl whose diary was published after she died in a Nazi concentration camp.
Mr Arafat, who is on a two-day visit to the Netherlands, said he wanted to learn at first hand about the suffering of Anne Frank and her family.
A crowd of several hundred people applauded as Mr Arafat entered the building.
However, one Jewish group criticised the visit as a publicity stunt that desecrated the memory of Holocaust victims.
