An Israeli soldier and a Palestinian militant have been killed in clashes during an Israeli raid in the West Bank town of Nablus, officials have said.

The Israeli army said the soldier was shot during a raid to detain suspected militants in the al-Ein refugee camp.

Witnesses said the militant who died was a 17-year-old member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The youth was the fourth Palestinian killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank since Sunday.

An unarmed 16-year-old Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli troops in Ramallah on Monday, Palestinian sources said. The Israeli military said its soldiers had identified and killed an armed man handling an explosive device.

The Israeli soldier was the first to be killed since July, when Hamas militants ambushed a patrol in the central Gaza Strip.
