Algerian court sentences bishop's killer

A court in Algeria has sentenced eight people to death for the killing of the Roman Catholic bishop of Oran and his driver in August, 1996.

Five others were given prison terms of two to three years.

The bishop -- a Frenchman, Pierre Claverie -- was killed with his driver by a remote-controlled bomb shortly aftermeeting the visiting French foreign minister, Herve de Charette.

He was one of several priests killed in a wave of attacks against foreigners blamed on Islamic militants.
