Hezbollah chief promises more Israeli deaths
By Jeremy Bowen in southern Lebanon The leader of Hezbollah, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, has vowed to kill more Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon. He told a rally in the east Lebanese town of Nabi Sheet that Hezbollah's Katyusha rockets were at the ready. Israel has threatened further assaults on Lebanese infrastructure if it continues to lose more men. It was the first time since the latest violence started that Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, probably Israel's most wanted man, had broken cover to address his followers. He said they would kill more Israeli soldiers. The fight against the occupation, he said, would not stop. Hezbollah have killed seven Israeli soldiers in a fortnight. Israelis have had enough of this. By July they will pull their troops out of Lebanon where they have been since 1978. Hezbollah think they are winning their war. Strong support from Hezbollah In South Lebanon, their supporters, which means almost every man, woman and child, gathered to mourn their dead, who they regard as martyrs.
There was a tangible feeling of unity and purpose here about the war, a feeling Israelis lost long ago.
We were taken to a frontline village by Hezbollah activists who would not be filmed. Hezbollah organise every aspect of life in places like this. They were trying to get the power back on. It was knocked out across Lebanon by the resent Israeli air strikes. Hezbollah pin-ups A woman I met and her sister think the Hezbollah guerrillas are heroes. She showed off the tail fin of an Israeli air to ground missile. It landed close to their house last week. She's a little in love with the Hezbollah fighters. They're her pin-ups. The men on her wall, though, are all dead. She explained how she would like to marry a Hezbollah fighter. Then suddenly there was a another Israeli air strike. Young women such as these and all the other civilians in the village are right in the firing line. The shrapnel which I picked up a little later was still hot from the air strikes. Both sides have agreed not to attack each other's civilians. Israel says it only does in answer to Hezbollah fire from villages. This time there hadn't been any. |
