map of Iraq
The US military says it has captured 16 suspected insurgents, including a man believed to be a local al-Qaeda leader.

The man, accused of a number of kidnappings, beheadings and attacks, was one of six people captured in the northern city of Mosul.

Another man was killed during the early morning raid there.

Two of the other suspected insurgents were captured in the western city of Falluja and the remaining eight in the nearby town of Karmah.

The two men captured by troops in Falluja are suspected of helping foreign extremist fighters to slip into the country.
