Lottery car drives couple apart

Graphic of lottery

By Frank Gardner in Cairo

It seems that getting rich quick can have its downside, wherever you are in the world.

For one Gulf couple in the United Arab Emirates, it's about to cost them their marriage.

The wife is seeking a divorce from her husband after he cheated her out of her lottery prize of a car.

According to the Dubai-based Gulf News, when the man went to collect her new Lexus for her, he reportedly took the $80,000 cash instead and refused to share it.

The woman, from the Emirate of Al Fujayrah, took him to court, won her case and he was ordered to pay back the money and costs.

Raffle mania

But the husband refused and has appealed to the High Court.

Whether he wins for not, his wife has had enough and has filed for divorce.

Meanwhile, the High Court is due to decide at the end of this month on who keeps the money.

Raffle mania has gripped the neighbouring Emirate of Dubai for some years now, with impoverished labourers from South Asia often winning kilos of gold.

On 1 March, Dubai is due to open its month-long shopping festival. It's a time of year when thousands fly in for discount bargains and in the hopes of striking it lucky at the lottery.
