Hundreds of people have been hurt in clashes between rival football fans and police in Iran.

The trouble started during a key championship match in the southern city of Shiraz, between the home side, Fadr-e-sepassi, and Esteghlal who come from Tehran.

The match had to be called off as stones, fruit and rubbish rained down on the field and crowd, hitting the referee and two players.

Football hooliganism is reported to have swelled in recent months in Iran, despite attempts by the authorities to curb it.
