UAE commutes death sentence on drug-trafficker

A court in the United Arab Emirates has commuted the death sentence on an Omani convicted of drug offences to life imprisonment.

The man, Malullah Bakkar Fayruz, was condemned to death in June for smuggling and dealing in drugs.

He had been arrested near the Omani border.

Several other people have been sentenced to death since last year under a recent law making drug-trafficking a capital offence, but no executions have been announced.
