Press horror at Iraq bombs

More than 180 people were killed in the attacks
Iraqi papers react with outrage to the devastating bomb attacks on Wednesday, with one commentator saying Baghdad has been turned into a "free killing zone".

Other papers in the region are similarly incensed, with one Cairo daily accusing the bombers of wanting "to annihilate the Iraqi people".

An Iranian paper suspects, however, that the Baghdad authorities will exploit the bombings to press world leaders for more help in reconstructing Iraq.

Basim al-Shaykh in Iraq's Al-Dustur

Yesterday, Baghdad woke up once again to the sight of blood. Hateful terrorism is, as usual, behind these criminal acts that target innocent civilians in a futile attempt to sow dissension among Iraqis. Yesterday, terrorism turned Baghdad into a free killing zone under a false pretext - the lie of resisting the occupation.

Salim Rasul in Iraq's Al-Bayan

Construction workers on al-Kadhimiya square fell victim to terror not because they belong to a particular sect or a specific nationality. What made them the target of the terrorist bombs is that they are the muscle on which we depend for Iraq's revival. They are the real builders of this country. They are the honourable men who do not beg for a living by slaughtering or bombing people and presenting the heads of their innocent victims to this or that Arab president or pompous prince.

Egypt's Al-Ahram

Terrorism continues to harvest the lives of tens of Iraqis every day. This situation cannot be called resistance. It is an evil stratagem to annihilate the Iraqi people and to take revenge on them.

Deniz Som in Turkey's Cumhuriyet

One of the biggest tragedies in human history is being lived through in Iraq, and the world is watching it. Children are being killed wholesale; those older than eight are being taken captive as "male terrorists", and neither Turkey nor the world is saying anything about it. Everybody is an accomplice in this crime.

Iran's Siyasat-e-Ruz

Iraq has witnessed a series of terrorist attacks while the 60th annual gathering of the UN has started in America... It can be easily proved that there is a logical connection between the two events. Iraqi officials are trying to attract world leaders' attention to get more for Iraqi reconstruction and force them to keep their previous promises. The current disturbances in Iraq give them a good opportunity to reach their objectives.

Ibrahim Karagul in Turkey's Yeni Safak

Do not trust the US and the UK. Do not expect anything from them. They will not produce solutions. They always wanted and planned this. But we could not see it. Still we have not. Wake up and come to your senses! Control this horrifying wave of violence before it crosses the Iraqi border.
