The accident happened on Sunday at an crossing near Samalut, a town on the River Nile about 200km (124 miles) south of the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

An unnamed police official is reported to have said that a lorry failed to give way to the bus.

The bus driver was reported to be among the dead.
