Dubai's taste of summer

So much cake, such little spoons

By Frank Gardner in Dubai

For those children still stuck in Dubai's soaring summer temperatures there was a mouth watering consolation prize; the world's largest ever ice-cream cake, or so its organisers claim, was unveiled at Dubai's Jumeira Beach Hotel in front of nearly 2,000 children and parents.

The 15-metre long, 2-metre wide cake, weighing more than 4,000 kg, took more than 1,000 hours to build in subzero conditions.

A team of 44 chefs worked on the creation, led by a cake building specialist flown in from California.

In the hopes of creating a new category for the Guinness Book of Records, the cake's measurements have been verified by a lawyer and officials from the Dubai government.

The frozen gateau, which has now been given away to children around Dubai, was part of a seasonal promotion to persuade people to stay on in Dubai during the sweltering summer months.
