The sentencing by an Israeli court of Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti to five consecutive life terms provokes a defiant response in many Arabic papers.
A Palestinian daily compares him to Nelson Mandela. Elsewhere in the region there is praise for what the papers see as Mr Barghouti's courage. And there are warnings that the move can only hamper progress towards peace.
Marwan Barghouti left the courtroom making the victory sign, while throwing the truth in the faces of his executioners: the intifada will go on and will win. The Israelis had better get ready for the occupation's funeral.
Al-Hayat Al-Jadidah - Palestinian (editorial)
Marwan is Palestine's Mandela, whether he leaves prison tomorrow or in a decade.
Al-Hayat Al-Jadidah - Palestinian (commentary)
The court sentence on Marwan Barghouti might sooth the Biblical anger of the rightists in Tel Aviv and Washington... However, it will do nothing on the Palestinian street but raise the level of sacred anger against the occupation.
Al-Hayat Al-Jadidah - Palestinian (2nd commentary)
The decision by an Israeli court to sentence Marwan Barghouti to five life sentences is a living example of what the occupier can do to those who are resisting expansionist endeavours.
Al-Watan - Saudi Arabia
Barghouti succeeded in transforming his trial from a security issue, as Israel wanted, into a political one. Thus Israel... found it good to exact a perfect revenge against Barghouti, who is courageously resisting it.
Al-Jazeera - Saudi Arabia
The judgment against Barghouti is a condemnation of Israel itself and a good example of its violation of other people's rights.
Ukaz - Saudi Arabia
The Israeli courts, by issuing their oppressive sentence, have added another black spot in international law to the reckless record of the extremist right-wing Tel Aviv government. This will not grant Israel more peace nor even contribute to lessening the bloody conflict, enmity and hatred which have overshadowed the region.
Al-Ra'y - Jordan
Israel by this verdict... affirms to the world once again that Israel has not changed its political, social and economic principles, which are based on racial segregation.
Al-Ittihad - UAE
By saying that the intifada will prevail, Barghouti wanted to stress that... in the end truth will win. That is, the Palestinian people will prevail despite all that is being used against them in the form of excessive aggression.
Al-Khalij - UAE
The people's freedom is the independence of the nation and its sovereignty. This is what all honoured freedom fighters believe in... Among those freedom fighters, who insist on the rights of their people to decide their fate, is Marwan Barghouti.
