A US soldier has been sentenced to 25 years in jail for the murder of an Iraqi national guard in May, the US military said in a statement.
It said Specialist Federico Merida pleaded guilty to "murder and making false statements during court martial proceedings" in the city of Tikrit.
Merida was also demoted to private and given a dishonourable discharge.
The military said the incident took place in Adwar, near Tikrit, without releasing any further details.
A military spokeswoman was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying that the sentence had been reduced from
30 to 25 years.
She added that it was one of the heaviest sentences handed to a US serviceman since the start of the Iraq war in 2003.
