Israeli undercover agents have shot dead a Palestinian militant in the West Bank city of Jenin, Israeli and Palestinian sources have said.

Assad Kahalila, a member of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, was killed while trying to escape an arrest attempt, Israeli military sources said.

A Palestinian man was also shot dead in Rafah refugee camp, witnesses said.

On Wednesday Israeli troops shot dead three suspected militants in a series of West Bank raids.

'Revenge' vow

Palestinian security sources told French news agency AFP Kahalila was shot dead by plainclothes Israeli policemen travelling in a civilian vehicle.

An al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades spokesman confirmed his death and vowed revenge.

In Wednesday's West Bank raids a suspected Hamas militant - identified as Hisham Haraish - was killed as he reportedly opened fire on Israeli troops in the town of Tulkarm, Israeli and Palestinian sources said.

The other two were killed in Nablus. Israel said the men had resisted arrest.

Palestinian sources named the pair as al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades members Naim Atari and Aboud Kasas.

A total of 24 suspected militants were rounded up in the raids, the army said.

Israel has been cracking down more intensively on suspected extremists in the West Bank in the past several weeks.
