Arabic press warns of Iraq unrest

Newspapers in the Arab world turn their attention to Iraq and warn of a possible violent backlash against what they see as the US occupation.

There are forecasts of an upsurge in revenge attacks unless coalition officials improve the daily lives of the Iraqi people.

Sacked soldiers and officers from the army and security organs will turn to opposition movements, who will welcome them with open arms. If we can imagine there are six million weapons in Iraq, we should then imagine the hell that will face the US forces in the coming days.

Al-Quds Al-Arabi - London-based, Arab nationalist

The Anglo-Saxon coalition which resolved to undertake aggression against Iraq talked a lot about Saddam Hussein's Iraq but they did not talk about Iraq's situation after Saddam. Iraq will in the coming days experience a degree of incidents which those who worked and planned for many years to destroy Iraq and displace its people and loot its resources never dreamed of.

Al-Dustur - Jordan

The killings and destruction committed by the US against Iraq did not stop the Iraqi resistance, and the US will never succeed in stopping it because people can't agree to foreign occupation. The Americans should prepare for more casualties on their side as their occupation continues. The Americans have proclaimed their victory against dictatorship in Iraq loudly, but they should know they have not defeated the brave people of Iraq.

Al-Jumhuriyah - Egypt

The US must review the period of its operation in Iraq, so as to leave Iraq to its own people in the shortest possible time, since its unpleasant stay and its inability to address the people's day to day problems will invite more revenge attacks.

Al-Watan - Qatar

The Iraqi people today are in need of work and stability, not pompous statements.

Al-Watan - Kuwait

After the US said that the aim of its policies is to spread democracy in Iraq, it announced a few days ago that Britain and itself are postponing the transfer of authority to the Iraqis to 'an unspecified time'.

Al-Hayat - London-based, pan-Arab, Saudi-owned

We can say that the war against Iraq, which caused thousands of victims, was waged due to unreliable data and intelligence, despite all the technological and human means available in the US.

Al-Ittihad - United Arab Emirates
