Mid-East press questions US aims

Some Middle Eastern papers continue to question US aims in the region while others criticise the role of Arab governments.

The part played by the media in forming the public's perception of the Iraq war also comes under scrutiny.

As we approach the time of reality, we must all think about what the future of Iraq will look like.

Al-Watan - Saudi

We must demand from the international community that the right to decide the destiny of the Iraqi people should be left to Iraqis alone.

Ukaz - Saudi

America has undertaken dangerous surgery and it is not yet clear whether the patient will go through the recovery process calmly and be able to get up after a while and use its wealth to travel down the road of development, or whether the patient will succumb to an illness far worse than that of the Baath Party.

Hamshahri - Iran

We cannot say for certain that the US intervention is better than a collapsing dictator, but Iraq's own history has made it prey to despots and totalitarian leaders.

Al-Riyadh - Saudi

It is mandatory for international legitimacy to end the policy of custodianship which is imposed by the superpower nations upon the small nations.

Ukaz - Saudi

The aim of the war is to transform people from citizens who have a nation to followers of a world order dominated by US power.

Al-Jamahiriyah - Libya

The Arabs and the region at large have lost the opportunity to assist Iraq and stop the USA from achieving its objectives.

Al-Hayat al-Jadidah - Palestinian

The Arab nations should not submit to the catastrophic war in Iraq and its political repercussions for the entire region. They should jointly make extra efforts in the international arena to end the war... They should strengthen international fronts against US policies and exhort international condemnation of US hostilities against Iraq.

Al-Ahram - Egypt

The US war on Iraq which we follow on our TV screens on a daily basis is a war of extinction and has nothing to do with the liberation of Iraqis from the injustice of a dictatorial regime.

Al-Jumhuriyah - Egypt

The war in Iraq has coincided with the transformation of the world into a small village owing to the enormous impact of the media, as a result of which the media have gained the upper hand.

Al-Jazirah - Saudi

It seems that the USA carried out hostile media propaganda against Iraq before its military attack. The US media has also deliberately decided to lie not only to international public opinion but also to its own public.

Al-Wafd - Egypt

We call on the international media to side with the views of the majority of the world community and to become closer to the voice of logic.

Al-Jazirah - Saudi
