US boot camp for journalists
US marine in training
Some journalists may be put off by the road marches

As a further sign of preparations for possible military action in Iraq, the Pentagon is planning special training for journalists who may be reporting on the conflict if it happens.

The training in basic military skills and knowledge would be for news personnel who may be attached to US military units.

The Pentagon stresses that no decisions have been made on operations against Iraq.

However, the Pentagon knows that when and if the conflict starts, it will be the focus of massive international attention.

Prudent planning, it says, demands that it prepares for "embedding media", as it puts it, with military units.

Safety and fitness

So, starting as early as mid-November, there will be one week training sessions at various bases.

Pentagon officials say part of the thinking is to make sure that journalists in the field are not a danger to themselves or others.

Officially, it says, the idea is to help ensure better access in the field and so that journalists can report on what's going on safely and accurately.

The training will include areas such as first aid, basic cover and concealment measures, familiarisation with military terms and equipment and even nuclear, biological and chemical protection procedures.

What is not clear at this stage is how many journalists may be put off by the fact that the courses will also include fitness training and road marches carrying backpacks.
