Water talks between Syria and Jordan

Syrian and Jordanian officials are meeting in Amman to discuss the long-standing issue of sharing the waters of the Yarmuk river on their common border.

Jordanian officials said they would focus on proposals for a joint dam on the river.

They were also expected to raise concerns about what they say are unilateral Syrian steps which had affected both the quality and level of the water in Yarmuk.

Sharing the waters of the river has long been a source of dispute between Jordan, Syria and Israel.

The joint dam project between Syria and Jordan had provoked protests from Israel, accusing Amman of violating the terms of the 1994 peace treaty.
