Israeli warplanes strike against Gaza
An Israeli tank in Gaza
The raid came after three Israelis died in their tank
Israeli warplanes have attacked a Palestinian security force building in Gaza, killing one man and wounding as many as 20 other people.

Another Palestinian man was killed in clashes with Israeli troops in the north of Gaza.

The Israeli army said the air raid was in retaliation for the deaths of three Israeli soldiers - killed when their tank was destroyed by a bomb on Thursday.

The BBC's Kylie Morris in Gaza says Palestinians had been expecting such a strike.

Militants of the Palestinian Popular Resistance had claimed responsibility for the well-planned attack on Thursday.

Heavier weapons

It was the first time they had used such a powerful anti-armour device against the Israelis in 16 months of conflict.

Israeli tanks on Friday destroyed an outpost of the Palestinian border police near the scene of the explosion.

Another Israeli soldier - a lieutenant-colonel - died during an incursion into Palestinian-controlled areas of the West Bank when a wall collapsed on him in the village of Saida.

Two of the Palestinians wounded in the air raid were in critical condition - one man lost an eye.

The official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, says the bombardment by F-16 fighter jets cut electricity to part of the nearby refugee camp of Jebalya, home to nearly 100,000 people.

A water storage tank and a telecommunications tower are also reported to have been damaged.

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer - currently on a three-day visit to the troubled region - held talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials on Friday.

Mr Fischer has not met Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who has been ill with flu since his return from the United States last week.

Mr Fischer's visit followed a three-day visit by UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.
