US recalls Mid-East envoy
The United States has recalled its special Middle East envoy Anthony Zinni for consultations, the State Department says.

"Secretary [of State Colin] Powell has asked Senior Advisor Anthony Zinni to return to Washington for consultations," spokesman Richard Boucher said.

Mr Zinni has been in the region nearly three weeks, trying - unsuccessfully - to forge a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians.

"The purpose of these consultations is to provide an assessment to the president and Secretary Powell of the situation in light of recent events, and how best to proceed," Mr Boucher said.

"General Zinni will remain engaged and return to the region," he said.
