Islamic activists said arrested in Egypt
Egypt's banned Islamist group, the Muslim Brotherhood, says that 15 of its members have been arrested. A statement from the organisation said the detainees included university professors and technical experts in government agencies. The Egyptian authorities have not confirmed the report. Hundreds of members of the Muslim Brotherhood have been arrested or held for questioning in the past few months. The organisation's goal is an Islamic state, but it says it only wants to achieve this through non-violent, constitutional means. The government has long accused the Brotherhood of being a front for violent Muslim extremists. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
