Arafat and Peres attend Oslo peace accord anniversary

The Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, and the former Israeli prime minister, Shimon Peres, have been attending ceremonies in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, to mark the fifth anniversary of the Israeli-Palestinian peace accords, which were secretly negotiated in the city.

In his speech, Mr Arafat accused the Israeli government of not complying with the accords and urged the international community to see that it did.

Mr Peres, for his part, said he would do everything he could to ensure that the terms of the accords were fulfilled.

The current Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, declined an invitation to attend the ceremonies.

The Oslo accords were signed in Washington in Septmber 1993.
