British warships visit Syria for first time in nearly fifty years

Two British warships are visiting Syria for the first time in forty-eight years.

The two vessels -- a frigate and a supply ship -- have docked in the port of Latakia.

Britain says the visit could lead to military cooperation between the two countries.

Diplomatic relations were restored in 1990 after being broken off four years earlier over allegations -- denied by Damascus -- of Syrian involvement in a plot to bomb an Israeli plane flying from London.
