My portfolio: Chris Etchells

Chris Etchells is currently working on a project photographing the decline of the Great British Pub. Here is a selection of his pictures, starting with The French Horn in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, which "closed in December 2007 and has never reopened".

The Shipperies, Kensington, Liverpool: "Built in the late 19th Century and named after the International Exhibition of Navigation, Travelling, Commerce and Manufacture. The area around the boarded-up pub is undergoing a major regeneration."

The Barley Mow, Mattersey, Nottinghamshire: "The pub was the only social community activity in the village before it closed. It shows that it’s not just inner city pubs that are at risk from the credit crunch but village community pubs as well."

The Robin Hood Hotel, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire: "This Grade Two listed building is regarded as an eyesore by many locals and has been closed for a good few years. The pub is in very poor condition and is in need of urgent attention."

The Duke of York, Darnall, Sheffield: "Located in the heart of Darnall, this pub was affected by the reduced population in the area and the closure of local factories and companies."

The Navigation, Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire: "This village pub on the edge of the Peak District National Park was closed in May 2009."

The Peel Park Inn, Salford: "This once smoke-filled haunt has had its doors and windows bricked up for many a year. It’s not just the Peel Park that has suffered. There are many pubs that have suffered the same fate within a few hundred yards."

The Carholme, Gresham Street, Lincoln: "Closed in 2007, it looks like the end of the road for this community local. Current proposals are for a change of use to managed residential accommodation."

The Waterloo Hotel, Trafalgar Street, Burnley: "Located in the run-down industrial weavers' triangle area in Burnley, an area set for a major regeneration project by Burnley Borough Council." Read more about Chris' project by following the link below.
