Population mapping distorts the conventional image of Nigeria considerably. Here, you can see Lagos as the most populated city while the capital, Abuja, doesn't register against the other large cities of Kaduna, Kano and Port Harcourt.
Japan is the tenth most populated country in the word with 127 million citizens. Tokyo is its biggest city.
India is the second most inhabited country in the world with over a billion people. You can see from this map how the population is spread almost throughout the country. However, the key centres of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai are clearly visible.
If ever one doubted the centrality of Athens to the modern state of Greece, you need only look at this map to convince you. The northern port of Thessaloniki is also key. It was in Greece that the first geographers worked and where the first atlas was made
Possibly one of the most distorted images of Argentina when you compare it to a traditional map of the South American country. The capital, Buenos Aires, is home to over a quarter of the country's population.
China's population appears relatively evenly distributed with the exception of the western area, due in part to the high number of large cities. The importance of the coastal regions where much of China's recent economic growth has been is clear.
The coastal cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth all dominate here. The further inland you go, the fewer the people. Equally, the western desert region is largely uninhabited.
Naturally, the Spanish capital Madrid, and Catalonian centre Barcelona, dominate the population cartogram of Spain. Interestingly, the popular southern coast has relatively few permanent inhabitants.
Running Turkey's population data through the software turns the country from its familiar squarish shape into a big headed creature with a long tail. Istanbul dominates of course, while the capital, Ankara, is barely visible.
This map flips the conventional map of UAE of its head. Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate by land mass yet here is dwarfed by Dubai which is the second largest by land mass but largest in terms of population.
Here, you can see how the three main centres of population, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town are very prominent. Beyond these major metropolitan areas, most South African towns are small and serve either mining communities or surrounding rural areas.
London, the UK's largest city with seven a half million inhabitants, clearly dominates. Conversely, the west of Wales and northern Scotland, both largely rural, shrink almost to insignificance.
Here you can quickly see which parts of the US are devoid of people. The state of Alaska, for example, is shrunk to thin strips of inhabitation. Elsewhere, the high number of large cities in the US shows up clearly on this map.
On a conventional map, Russia dominates with its huge land mass that makes it the largest country in the world. But here, mapping Russia's population shows the dominance of Moscow and the west of the country.
