South Africa: Township reports

New Brighton is the most well known township in Port Elizabeth. Around 40,000 people live here.

Phumeza has a fruit stall in the Joe Slovo settlement, in the outskirts of Port Elizabeth.

Rosie Vena, 63, thinks these elections are going to make things worse in South Africa.

Mom Mngadi runs a soup kitchen in the Red Location township. She feeds around 60 people three times a week.

The Red Location is a bedrock of the ANC and resistance to apartheid.

Amagwinya, or vetkoeks, are fried dough balls, like savoury doughnuts, being prepared here in a little shop in New Brighton.

Joe Slovo is a settlement which forms part of Port Elizabeth's townships.

A little boy who lives in Zwide township, where ANC veteran Govan Mbeki, father of former President Thabo, is buried.
