In pictures: Israeli strikes on Gaza

Smoke billowed from buildings in Gaza, as Israel continued air strikes for a third day (Warning: Upcoming pictures may cause discomfort to some viewers).

The latest raids began days after a six-month ceasefire lapsed, resulting in some of the deadliest violence in the troubled territory in decades.

Israel has hit targets in all Gaza's main towns, including Gaza City in the north, where damage is seen above, and the southern towns of Khan Younis and Rafah.

Part of the Islamic University - a support base for the Islamist group Hamas that controls Gaza - was destroyed.

Hamas says 300 Palestinians have died since Saturday, while the United Nations says 56 civilians are dead.

Meanwhile, in Israel, a second person was killed by militant rockets and dozens of others needed treatment for shock.

Israel has called up 6,500 army reservists amid speculation that it may launch a ground offensive.

Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni said Israel was determined to "change realities" in Gaza.
