Bettie Page, a pin-up girl during the 1950s, has died at the age of 85. In her heyday she was one of the world's most photographed women.

Her suggestive poses in lacy underwear, bikinis, or naked made her a celebrity. Her agent described her as "the embodiment of beauty".

Some of her poses were more risque than others. Some showed her in bondage and spanking, while in this one she hangs from a tree with a knife in her mouth.

The secretary-turned-model said her career was "much better than pounding a typewriter eight hours a day, which gets monotonous".

Her career included burlesque routines, and an appearance in Playboy magazine wearing nothing but a Santa hat.

With her trademark dark hair and heavy fringe, she was instantly recognisable. She withdrew from public life for 50 years, refusing to have her photo taken as she aged.
