A march has been held in the Greek capital Athens as part of a general strike over the government's economic policies. Police feared a continuation of riots over the shooting of a teenager on Saturday.
Trades unions refused a request from the government to call off the march, which had been scheduled to be held before the riots erupted.
Some youths confronted police on Wednesday, throwing stones, bottles and petrol bombs.
Police fired tear gas to repel the youths. The estimated cost of damage to businesses in Athens from the ongoing violence stands at 1bn euros ($1.3bn, £874m).
As police battled on the streets, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis promised to restore order, and announced measures to compensate businesses that have suffered.
Meanwhile, mourners laid flowers on the grave of the teenager, 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos. Two policemen have been charged over his death.
