Mandela prison years remembered

Belfast is hosting an exhibition of artwork by one of the most important and iconic figures in recent history - Nelson Mandela. The lithographs capture the South African leader's 18 years in prison on bleak Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town.

This work depicts a guard tower at the prison. The exhibition is at Batik Interiors in Belfast's gasworks site and opens to the public from 20 November to 22 November.

The daily walk past the barbed wire and guard towers. As well as the lithographs, photographs by Greg Bartley and Mandela's personal photographer Jürgen Schadeberg will be on display.

The view through the bars of that cell. The opening night of the exhibition, 19 November, will be attended by Mandela's friend and photographer Jürgen Schadeberg.
