Republican candidate John McCain held a rally in Virginia as both he and his rival, Democratic candidate Barack Obama, targeted key states in the final weekend of campaigning.
With just three days to go until election day, Senator Obama went to the crucial western state of Nevada.
Senator McCain addressed a crowd in Newport News, Virginia. Polls in the state, which has not backed a Democrat for president since 1964, show Mr Obama ahead there.
Mr Obama held a rally in Henderson, Nevada, where he pledged to "change this country and change the world".
Speaking to supporters, Mr McCain attacked his rival over his tax plans and said: "We can and will win."
Polls suggest Mr Obama also has the edge over Mr McCain in Nevada, which voted for George W Bush four years ago.
Mr McCain insists that Mr Obama lacks the experience to handle the international threats facing the US.
Mr Obama is warning against the dangers of complacency, and urging supporters to make sure they vote.
