In pictures: Snapshot of Antarctica

Leaving for Antarctica

BBCRussian.com reader Anton Chekalin took these pictures during a trip to Antarctica. Anton: "There is a flight from St Petersburg to Antarctica – but only once a year.

Airstrip

"An airstrip on the ice near Novolazarevskaya research station, Antarctica.

Huge boulders

"It is 3am. But the sun never sets and one never feels sleepy. On the way to the glacier I saw huge boulders – perfectly shaped. I have also seen such boulders in Russia's Karelia.

Penguin

"This was taken near Schirmacher Oasis. Penguins come here all the way from the ice barrier 100km away.

Snow-covered vehicle

"This vehicle covered in snow dates back to the times of the Soviet Union's exploration of Antarctica.

Tents

"A storm is coming and it is time to seek shelter in the tents. At such times a man can be simply swept away by the wind and it is dangerous to be in an open area on your own.

Aircraft swept away

"The aircraft behind me was swept away by the wind from the runway.

Sign

"If one is to believe the signs, this arrow points to an unidentified flying object, but I failed to find it there.

Water well

"This is a five-metre-deep water well melted into a glacier at the Novolazarevskaya station. The light acquires a bright blue colour as it travels through the ice.

Water well

"This is me climbing into the well." You can send your photos to yourpics@bbc.co.uk. See right hand side for terms and conditions
