A man ran away from waves crashing onto the beach at Eastbourne, East Sussex, as bad weather swept across parts of England on Sunday.

Fragment of Roman glass

A fragment of Roman glass dating back to the third Century is one of thousands of artefacts from the Vindolanda settlement, by Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, which this week got £4m in lottery funding.

Philip and Amanda Peak

Philip and Amanda Peak criticised a seven-year jail term handed to footballer Luke McCormick on Monday for causing a crash which killed their two sons. McCormick had been drinking before the collision.

Polly the tortoise

Polly the African pancake tortoise is recovering at Bristol Zoo after an operation to remove a bladder stone the size of a small egg. A hole was cut from her shell to remove the stone.

The Bronze Woman monument

On Wednesday England's first public statue of a black woman was unveiled in London's Stockwell Memorial Garden. The 3m (10ft) high sculpture is of an unnamed Caribbean woman holding her child.

QE2 in Tyneside

The QE2 sailed out of the River Tyne on Thursday after its final visit to Tyneside before entering retirement as a floating hotel in Dubai.

Newbury Racecourse

And crowds enjoyed the sunshine at Newbury Racecourse, in Berkshire, on Thursday as they watched jockey Frankie Dettori win the Vodafone EBF Maiden Stakes on horse Film Set.
