In pictures: Your childhood outfits

Tarten suits

Tank tops and tartan, tracksuits and towelling. The Magazine asked readers to send evidence of the sartorial sins committed in their youth. Exhibit A is Beth and Victoria Foster - bang on trend today.

Poncho and Biba jumpsuit

A poncho and mini for Kirsty Regan of Edinburgh; and right is Claire Lanigan in a green Biba sunsuit: "Although a little loud, very trendy at the time - wish my mum had kept it for my children."

Coronation outfits

"Made by my mother for the Coronation in 1952. She made most of our clothes, and occasionally lost interest and failed to finish items till we were much too large," says Julia Barrett.

Picnic in maroon handknits

Three generations of Richard Newstead's family picnicking near Slough in the 1960s. "Taken not long after my grandmother purchase a job lot of maroon wool."

Andrew and Paula Brown

Andrew Brown and sister Paula in Gateshead, 1971: "Perhaps an attempt at vocational conditioning. But I failed to pursue a naval career, and my sister decided against a life of sheep-herding."

With mother

Jo Thomas, right, wears a paisley anorak with a kilt-effect skirt and knee socks. "My sister Tracy is in the fetching red number, with mum Ann stood behind in about 1977."

Sunday best

Blazers, ties, polished shoes, scrubbed faces - Sunday best in the 1970s for Dave Edwards of Rotherham.

Trio of outfits

From left, Caroline Short's mother favoured smocked dresses and velvet berets; Binita Watkins, centre front, having "a real Austin Powers moment" in 1973; and Alex Loader and his brother.

Belfast, 1974

Easter in Belfast, 1974. "I am the little guy sitting down at the front with the hat," says Sean McLaughlin.

All dressed up

Daniel Hiscocks with his mother and brother; and right is John and Paula Berges, of Milwaukee, at a cousin's wedding. "Proudly wearing outfits my mother made for us. It was the 70s, man..."

Feedign peacocks

Chris Williams in 1966. "I was four years old, feeding peacocks in North Wales. I think my mum must have been a fan of Rupert the Bear."

Opaque tights, knitted hats, tracksuits

But yesterday's fashion crimes may be today's in-demand vintage clobber. Left is Sarah Tynan and twin in tweed and opaque tights, 1966; with Yvonne, Peter and Colin Mills in tracksuits in 1978.
