Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin made her first speech to the party's National Convention in St Paul, Minnesota.
After her address, Mrs Palin's family joined her on stage, including her pregnant 17-year old daughter Bristol, second from left.
Her fiery speech and down-to-earth persona delighted the Republican faithful.
Senator John McCain was then formally nominated as the Republican candidate in the 4 November elections.
Earlier, former New York Mayor Rudi Giuliani told delegates that America "will be safe in the hands of John McCain".
Former Governor Mike Huckabee launched scathing attacks against the Democrats and their nominee Barack Obama.
Throughout the day, delegates loudly cheered the speakers, contributing to the festive atmosphere.
