Hillary Clinton played a key role in calling for her former rival to be nominated by acclamation.
Her husband Bill was greeted by a standing ovation and pledged his full support for the man who beat his wife to the candidacy.
Vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden stayed with the family theme by paying tribute to his 91-year-old mother in the crowd.
And the man himself, Mr Obama, made a brief appearance on stage after Mr Biden's speech. He will give his own address to the convention on Thursday.
The historic first nomination of an African-American by a major US party was all too much for this onlooker.
Earlier in the day, Mr Obama's wife Michelle (silhouetted) spoke to campaign volunteers and wounded Iraq veterans, such as Tammy Duckworth (R).
Away from the high political theatre, in downtown Denver, the political merchandise is flying off the stalls.
