Thousands of people have defied a curfew in mainly Muslim Indian-administered Kashmir, a day after a separatist leader and four others were killed in clashes with security forces.

The protests have been some of the biggest since an uprising against Indian rule began nearly 20 years ago. Among the dead was a boy allegedly shot while demonstrating.

Protesters have also taken to the streets in the mainly-Hindu area of Jammu amid fears the demonstrations - originally over a small piece of land - are assuming more of a communal nature.
