Supporters of Jacob Zuma, the head of South Africa's ruling party, have been rallying near a court in Pietermaritzburg where Mr Zuma is trying to have corruption charges against him thrown out.
Mr Zuma, favourite to become South Africa's president next year, faces charges including corruption, fraud, racketeering and money-laundering linked to a controversial arms deal. He denies the charges.
The supporters promised to bring Pietermaritzburg to a halt during the hearing. Some began gathering overnight, holding a vigil during which they danced and sang.
They say Mr Zuma is fit to serve as president and has been the victim of a politically motivated campaign. Mr Zuma's critics say he wants to stall legal proceedings until after he is elected president.
Political commentator Adam Habib says Mr Zuma enjoys the support of a large number of poor and marginalised people, who believe he has been the victim of a conspiracy theory.
Mr Zuma, who became the head of the African National Congress in December after a fierce leadership battle with President Thabo Mbeki, has said he will stand down only if he is found guilty.
