The week began with dozens of competitors hurling themselves down the steep slope of Cooper's Hill in Brockworth, Gloucestershire, in pursuit of a circle of cheese. The perilous event is held every year.

A brave tourist paddles in the sea at Brighton beach

As much of the north of England enjoyed good Bank Holiday weather, the south of the country was battered by rain and winds. A brave beachgoer paddled in the sea at Brighton.

Lorry driver protest

Lorry drivers staged a protest in London over the rising cost of fuel. Hundreds of drivers parked on the A40, closing the carriageway.

There were tears and hugs when soldiers from the 1st Battalion, The Mercian Regiment, arrived back at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire after a six-month tour of duty in Iraq.

The sisters of Amar Aslam, the 17-year-old found dead in a park in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, paid tribute to their brother. Samreen Aslam said the family's lives had been left "painful and meaningless".

A statue of three Manchester United legends was unveiled outside the club's Old Trafford ground. The artwork depicts the "Holy Trinity" of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law.

Torrential rain caused flash flooding across south-west England. At the storm's peak, the fire brigade was taking calls every few seconds from worried residents, and hundreds of homes were flood damaged.
