Firefighters have been trying to contain a blaze at the building that is home to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
It is not known what caused the fire at the distinctive 1960s building that houses the orchestra.
Firefighters cut holes in the zinc roof as they attempted to reach the source of the blaze.
Staff and visitors were safely evacuated, but reports say the building has suffered major damage.
Musicians were allowed back into the building to save their instruments, although some were too heavy to move. Jan Diesselhorst left with his cello.
