A 19-year-old man appeared in court charged with murdering Jimmy Mizen, 16, who was killed in a bakery shop in Lee, south-east London.

Islington Museum

A £1.2m museum opened charting the history of Islington, from its village roots to today's bustling north London borough. The Islington Museum also features a bust of one-time resident Lenin.

Steven Bigby, 22, was stabbed to death during rush hour in central London's Oxford Street. Anthony Costa, 18, from Walthamstow, east London, is accused of his murder.

Sex and the City launch

Hundreds of fans greeted the stars of Sex and the City, as the movie based on the TV series had its world premiere in Leicester Square. Star Sarah Jessica Parker described the event as "unforgettable".

Boris Johnson

Mayor Boris Johnson scrapped the Londoner newspaper, saying the move would save £2.9m - up to £1m of which will be used to fund the planting of 10,000 new trees in London's most deprived areas.

Madame Tussauds poll

Madame Tussauds scrapped plans to make a wax model of Prime Minster Gordon Brown after a public poll voted "overwhelmingly" against the move.

police using stop-and-search powers

Police began using extended stop-and-search powers following a spate of murders, enabling them to search people without reasonable suspicion. Weapon scanners were also installed in Tube stations.

Tommy (left) and Albert Willett

Brothers Tommy and Albert Willett were jailed for life for the murder of father-of-two Balbir Matharu in Stratford, east London. They ran him over as he tried to stop them stealing his car radio.
