Cosmati pavement in Westminster Abbey

Restoration work began on a Medieval mosaic known as the Cosmati Pavement at Westminster Abbey. It is hoped the mosaic will go on permanent display after the two-year restoration.

No alcohol poster on Tube

London's new mayor Boris Johnson unveiled a plan to ban the drinking of alcohol on public transport but the Rail Maritime and Transport Union said it appeared "not to have been thought through very well".

The Stanley Road house explosion

A man died and two people were injured after a gas explosion reduced two homes to rubble in South Harrow. Police treated the cause of the blast as suspicious.

Boris Johnson and Michael Bloomberg

Mayor Boris Johnson announced a "new era of co-operation" after meeting New York counterpart Michael Bloomberg at City Hall. They aim to exhange best practices in government, Mr Johnson said.

Tirrell Davis, 17, and Brandon Richmond, 14, received life sentences for murdering Kodjo Yenga, 16, in a gang attack in Hammersmith, west London. Three other youths were sentenced for manslaughter.
