In pictures: Hainan Olympic relay

Thousands of people turned out to cheer the Olympic torch as it began its tour of mainland China at the resort of Sanya, on Hainan island.

Security was noticeable but low-key, and the event went smoothly with none of the protests that marked stages of the torch's journey outside China.

Enthusiastic supporters climbed trees to get a better view of the torch as it passed.

Actress Ziyi Zhang was among the celebrities, athletes and sponsors carrying the flame.

As was Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan, who lit the brazier at the end of Sunday's relay.

The torch is scheduled to visit every province in China before arriving in Beijing for the Olympics opening ceremony.

It will spend three days in Hainan before heading to the southern province of Guangdong
