A bomb exploded on a bus as it stopped to take on passengers in a suburb of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

At least 23 people were killed and about 50 injured survivors were rushed to two hospitals in the area, officials said.

The government blamed the bomb on Tamil Tiger rebels who are fighting the army in the country's north for a separate homeland for the Tamil minority.

A military spokesman said the bomb was hidden in a parcel left on an overhead luggage rack on the bus.

Witnesses said the explosion tore apart the bus and sent a large fireball into the air.
