In pictures: Albania explosions

A series of explosions erupted from an arms depot north of the Albanian capital, Tirana.

Plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the scene of the blasts, which were loud enough to be heard dozens of kilometres away.

Emergency services rushed to help those injured by the explosions, which happened as specialist teams dismantled munitions at the base.

Casualties from the surrounding area began arriving at hospitals for treatment.

Some of the dozens of injured were young children.

The force of the blasts caused damage over a wide area.

Windows in buildings were shattered, leading to many injuries.

Many residents will be unable to return to homes that have been badly damaged.
