In pictures: Kerala pipes and drums

More than 100 musicians performed at a recent festival of traditional Keralan art forms in the Indian city of Mumbai. Photos and text: Prachi Pinglay

The drummers and pipers play to create a trance-like effect on the audience.

Standing four deep, the musicians varied the tempo over a period of two hours.

A simple platform served as a stage with a picture backdrop, lamps and traditional leaf garlands.

Some of the performers are more than 70 years old, and have been practising and performing for decades.
