The US military has said its troops discovered a "torture complex" in an al-Qaeda in Iraq safe haven near Muqdadiya during an operation in Diyala province on 9 December.

The complex consisted of three detention facilities with one doubling as both a headquarters building and torture facility.

The torture chambers had chains on the walls and ceilings, and an iron bed that was connected to a power supply.

The troops also found knives and swords covered in blood.

The remains of 26 people were also uncovered in several mass graves near the site. Diyala has been the focus of some of the fiercest attacks by insurgents in recent months.
